Choosing Between a Move-In-Ready Home and a Project Property

Choosing Between a Move-In-Ready Home and a Project Property

“Move-in ready” and “project property” are useful starting descriptions, but buyers should investigate what each actually means.

A freshly presented home may still have older systems. A home with dated finishes may have recently serviced or replaced equipment.

Compare condition through inspections and available records rather than appearance alone.

For a project property, obtain realistic estimates and consider how repairs affect financing, insurance, available cash, and your moving schedule.

For a more finished home, decide whether the existing choices suit your needs or whether you expect to replace them anyway.

Separate essential work from optional preferences.

Also consider your ability to coordinate contractors and manage uncertainty. A renovation budget should not depend entirely on optimistic assumptions.

The better option is the property whose condition, costs, and responsibilities fit your plans.
